"I like the work here as I have the freedom to help out other people as they help me to do my job. My role is very varied and I get exposed to a lot of stuff so I feel that I’m learning a lot."

Graduate Quality Assurance Engineer Natalia

"I graduated in Mechanical Engineering and Math from the Christian Brothers University in Memphis and I joined Smith & Nephew last year as a Quality Assurance Engineer in our Trauma franchise.

"My first experience of the medical device industry was interning at another company where they needed my language skills. I didn’t know about the industry before that, but after finding out more about it during my internship, I really wanted to build my career in the industry.

"Once I graduated, I applied to Smith & Nephew for a few reasons. I like the fact it’s a big company, I like that it’s international as I’m international too (I’m from Brazil), and I really identified with the company’s values.

"I have a cousin who I’m very close to, who had a car accident and his doctors actually used all the parts that I now work on to help him recover. I didn’t know that I would be working on the Trauma side when I applied to the graduate programme here, but it feels like I was meant to work for this company! I’m really happy here.

"I work in the Sustaining Team which means that I support our existing products. I work on the gauges we use to inspect the parts and carry out statistical studies on them to make sure that they’re capable of catching parts if they haven’t been produced correctly. I also create the inspection drawings that guide our inspectors on which gauge to use for each implant. I like the work here as I have the freedom to help out other people as they help me to do my job. My role is very varied and I get exposed to a lot of stuff so I feel that I’m learning a lot.

"I have two really great managers who are very supportive. I’m never afraid to ask for help. We work to tight targets in my team, which I like as it keeps me focussed and motivated. I was an athlete in school and I’m very competitive, so having targets is important to me as I like having a challenge to overcome.

"My best experience so far was getting to watch a training lab with surgeons where they were using the product that I support. It meant that I got to see how the product is used in a real life setting.

"Overall, my time here has been better than a dream! I never imagined that I’d enjoy working as much as I do. I feel like I was one of the lucky ones who found exactly what they want to do right after college."
