Leaf Patient Monitoring System recognized with Frost & Sullivan’s Technology Leadership Award

Smith & Nephew (NYSE:SNN; LSE:SN), the global medical technology business, is proud to announce that Frost & Sullivan has awarded Leaf Healthcare the 2018 Global Technology Leadership Award for its breakthrough wireless patient monitoring solutions.

The Leaf Patient Monitoring System is a comprehensive,  clinically-proven technology that helps significantly reduce the risk of pressure injuries.1 It consists of a wireless device that is adhered to a patient's chest to monitor the patient's position, orientation, movement and activity, and is distributed in the US by Smith & Nephew, also an investor in the company.  A randomized control trial (RCT) trial conducted at Stanford University and recently published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies showed that patients protected by the Leaf Patient Monitoring System were 73% less likely* to develop a pressure ulcer/injury.1

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents the Technology Leadership Award to the company that demonstrates uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies that deliver significant customer value. This year, Leaf is the only award winner for patient mobility monitoring. “The Leaf Patient Monitoring Solution is a specialized healthcare tool that helps improve patient outcomes through minimizing immobility-related complications,” said Patrick Riley, Principal Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “The Leaf Patient Monitoring System’s clinical efficacy, versatility, and proven client value clearly demonstrate why Leaf Healthcare earns the 2018 Frost & Sullivan Technology Leadership Award in the global patient mobility monitoring market.”

Pressure injuries are among the most common and costly hospital-acquired conditions, costing the US healthcare system $11 billion annually.2 The average incremental hospitalization cost of a hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) is $8,014 per patient.3

Mike Zagger, Senior Vice President US Wound Management, Smith & Nephew, commented, “Smith & Nephew is focused on providing not just products to treat conditions, but also supporting healthcare professionals through leading edge technologies designed to support prevention as well. We are proud to provide this device, alongside our full suite of pioneering products, to support healthcare professionals and enable them to reduce the human and economic cost of wounds.”
