Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: Aoife’s journey at Smith+Nephew

At Smith+Nephew, apprenticeships are more than just an entry point - they’re a launchpad. We’re committed to helping people grow, stretch and shape meaningful careers from day one.

For Apprenticeship Week, we sat down with Aoife Curran‑Smirk, a New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer Apprentice based in Hull, to hear her story: why she chose an apprenticeship, what she’s learned so far, and what makes Smith+Nephew a great place to begin a career with purpose.

Meet Aoife Curran-Smirk

Position: NPI Engineer Apprentice

"I knew this was the kind of team I wanted to grow with."

How did you first hear about the apprenticeship?

Aoife discovered the opportunity through her college (Ron Dearing UTC), when members of the Smith+Nephew team visited to deliver a lunch‑and‑learn session.

"I’d been considering studying medical engineering full‑time, but the cost wasn’t ideal. The degree apprenticeship felt like the perfect alternative - it allows me to build my future while gaining hands‑on experience."

Why Smith+Nephew?

Before joining, Aoife explored the company’s values and quickly recognised a strong alignment with her own.

“I looked into Smith+Nephew’s ethics and values and felt they aligned really well with mine. After meeting the team and the managers, I knew these were the kind of people I wanted to build a career with.”

She also found a welcoming community through SNYP (Smith+Nephew Young Professionals) - a network that offers connection, learning, and collaboration across the business.

“It feels like my version of university societies. The mixers and events have been fantastic for meeting people and understanding different parts of the business.”

A day in the life of an NPI Apprentice

Aoife’s workdays are anything but repetitive.

She began her journey working on a project with foam dressings - supporting machine trials, writing protocols, and helping design components. Now, she’s part of a fast‑paced wound project where she continues to learn through hands‑on experience and shadowing colleagues in various disciplines.

“Things have picked up quickly. I’m learning so much every day.”

This blend of academic learning and real‑world application echoes Smith+Nephew’s commitment to helping people grow professionally and personally - offering development that is tailored, meaningful, and empowering.

Support that helps you stretch and succeed

Apprenticeships at Smith+Nephew are designed with structured support built in. Aoife has two project mentors, a permanent desk‑based mentor, and a manager who helps guide her annual goals.

“I’ve learned so much from colleagues with academic backgrounds as well as those who took apprenticeship routes. It’s inspiring to see both perspectives.”

This reflects Smith+Nephew’s broader culture - one rooted in empathy, continuous learning, and collaboration.

Growing skills, confidence and impact

When asked what she’s most proud of, Aoife lights up talking about the contributions she’s already making:

“I’m proud of designing different elements of a machine we use and improving my CAD skills. I never expected to be writing protocols so early, but I’m already doing it.”

Moments of patient connection have also shaped her experience:

“A surgeon visited to explain how our products help patients, and it really put into perspective the importance of what we do. When you’re deep in day‑to‑day work, it’s easy to forget how meaningful it all is.”

Purpose is core to who we are as a business, and our apprentices feel that impact from day one.

Looking ahead

Aoife’s ambitions are rooted in growth and impact:

“My goal is to finish my degree apprenticeship with strong grades, continue making an impact on patients’ lives, strive for the best, and keep connecting with the people who bring our work into perspective.”
