Laura R

Manufacturing Engineer
Costa Rica

Graduate - Laura

I have loved chemistry since I was a little girl, so it seems very natural that I am now a Manufacturing Engineer specialising in chemical processes.

I studied Chemical Engineering at the Universidad de Costa Rica. My degree gave me the opportunity to learn more about chemical reactions and their application to industrial processes.

After university, I joined Smith & Nephew on the graduate programme as a Quality Assurance Engineer.  I had first heard about Smith & Nephew through friends who already worked for the company. They were always talking about the organisation, the products, their roles and the opportunities to grow. Hearing so many positive things, made me want to be part of it!

As a Quality Assurance Engineer, I worked on the continuous improvement of the manufacturing process. For example, by finding ways to streamline the production line and improve the ergonomics for the operators. Before starting with Smith & Nephew, I felt nervous about my lack of experience, but the support, training and opportunities available helped me to grow in confidence, on both a personal and a professional level.

I have since progressed to my current role as a Manufacturing Engineer. I have been focussing on the chemical aspects of our manufacturing processes, and the regulations and legal requirements surrounding them. It’s new to me, so I am learning a lot!

Working at Smith & Nephew, I find that each day is different. There are often new projects that challenge both my knowledge and experience, but there is always someone available to listen to my ideas and support me.

To be successful in Engineering takes a lot of effort; there is always something new to learn. In my opinion though, it’s worth it!
