ALLEVYN is a hydrocellular wound dressing designed specifically for the management of exuding wounds.1 ALLEVYN dressings are comprised of three layers; a breathable bacteria proof and waterproof polyurethane top film, a hydrocellular absorbent foam core and a non-adherent wound contact layer.

The 3 layers of ALLEVYN work together to provide moisture balance for support of the natural wound healing process.

What is Moisture Balance?

Maintenance of the moisture equilibrium within a wound environment, in order to facilitate wound closure. The performance of ALLEVYN in providing moisture balance is dependant on two mechanisms:  

  1. An Effective Barrier Function2
    An effective barrier function prevents leakage, drying out and contamination of the wound environment by external factors.
  2. Efficient Fluid Management
    Allevyn manages fluid efficiently through controlled absorption and evaporation. Without these functions Moisture Balance cannot be maintained
  • No barrier function = potential leakage, drying-out, contamination, infection
  • Poor fluid management = potential cause of maceration, skin breakdown

The 3-layer design of ALLEVYN creates a sealed system, providing an effective barrier function to enable moist wound healing. There are 3 requirements to an effective barrier function:

  1. Barrier to exogenous bacteria
  2. Prevention of contamination
  3. Prevention of leakage
  • ALLEVYN provides an effective barrier function2 by creating a sealed system.
  • Bacterial and waterproof top film.
  • Effective fixation at dressing/skin interface.

ALLEVYN◊ dressings are comprised of an advanced triple-layered construction, which facilitates wound closure through optimal fluid management.

ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive has an innovative and unique design. The improvements in fluid handling combined with new sealed and shaped edges provides protection against leakage of exudate. The problems associated with leakage of exudates are:

ALLEVYN Adhesive and ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive – Delivering excellent fluid management

Optimal fluid management is an essential function of dressings for use on exuding wounds. The ability to manage exudate effectively results in the optimal wound environment. Failure to manage wound exudate can result in fluid pooling at the skin surface, which has the potential to cause maceration, or leakage, which may allow the penetration of bacteria into the wound.

ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive – Providing protection against leakage

In managing patients' wounds, leakage of exudate can be a combination of poor fluid handling and/or dressing design. Protection against leakage becomes particularly important depending on different wound types. For example protection against leakage on a leg ulcer may become more important if the patient is mobile and the leg is vertical. As well as the potential of delaying wound healing or increasing the risk of bacterial penetration, leakage of exudate can also have a considerable impact on a patient's quality of life.

    Answer: See the Indications tab.
  2. Which products have improved fluid handling?
    Answer: ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive, ALLEVYN Adhesive, ALLEVYN Sacrum, ALLEVYN Plus Adhesive and ALLEVYN Plus Sacrum
  3. Which products have changed in shape?
    Answer: Only ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive has changed in shape. The edges are sealed and shaped to protect against leakage.
  4. Is ALLEVYN easier to remove with the improvements?
    Answer: ALLEVYN is already easy to apply and remove but the border area of ALLEVYN Adhesive has been improved and has a higher permeability. The increased breathability of the border area may reduce problems associated with removal.
  5. Has the thickness or the surface area of ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive changed?
    Answer: No, the thickness (i.e. 6mm) and surface area of ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive dressing remain the same. In developing the improved design we have ensured that the shaped edges reflect the required surface area for that dressing.
  6. Is ALLEVYN waterproof?
    Answer:Yes the outer polyurethane film layer of ALLEVYN Adhesive and Non-Adhesive dressings are completely waterproof. Please note: ALLEVYN Non-adhesive will require secondary fixation. This prevents strikethrough of excess exudate minimizing the chance of cross-contamination and wound infection.
  7. Is ALLEVYN comfortable for the patients?
    Answer: Yes ALLEVYN dressings are soft and cushioning giving excellent patient comfort and protection. ALLEVYN also contributes to a pressure reduction protocol 3.
  8. How often does ALLEVYN need to be changed?
    Answer: During the early stages of treatment ALLEVYN dressings should be inspected frequently. ALLEVYN dressings can be left in place for up to seven days depending on the volume of exudate in accordance with local clinical protocol. ALLEVYN Sacrum and ALLEVYN Lite can be left in place for up to five days. ALLEVYN is easy to apply and remove.
  9. Is ALLEVYN Bacteria Proof?
    Answer: Yes the outer polyurethane film layer of ALLEVYN dressings 6 is bacteria proof. The outer film layer prevents fluid and bacterial strike-through minimizing the chance of cross-contamination.
  10. Does removal of ALLEVYN compromise wound integrity?
    Answer: No, wound integrity is not compromised upon removal of ALLEVYN. ALLEVYN dressings absorb and retain exudate and cellular debris ensuring minimal mess at dressing change. ALLEVYN adhesive dressings are non-adherent to the wound surface therefore causing minimal disruption of healing tissue and reducing trauma upon removal. The edges of ALLEVYN Non-Adhesive are also sealed and shaped to minimise chance of dressing disturbance.
  11. Is ALLEVYN absorbent.
    Answer: Yes, ALLEVYN dressings are proven to be highly absorbent 4. ALLEVYN absorbs and transpires fluid in order to provide optimal fluid handling. ALLEVYN dressings are designed to cater for all wound shapes, sizes and levels of exudate, from lightly exuding wounds to very highly exuding wounds. Please see the product information page for more information on specific dressings.
  12. Can ALLEVYN dressings stand up to daily wear and tear?
    Answer: ALLEVYN Adhesive dressings have a profiled cross section narrowing to micro-thin edges which ensure the dressing remains securely in place and prevents accidental removal by shear between the dressing and clothes and bedding.
  13. Is there a risk of maceration?
    Answer: ALLEVYN dressings have a more breathable top film1 and modified foam, which means that ALLEVYN provides optimal fluid handling. This optimises the wound environment which leads to reduced risk of maceration and promotion of rapid wound closure.
  14. Do all these extra features and benefits make ALLEVYN expensive?
    Answer: No, good adhesive properties of ALLEVYN Adhesive and the ability of ALLEVYN to manage moisture balance effectively 1 means that the ALLEVYN dressings can stay in place for up to seven days 5 reducing the number of dressings changes and therefore the cost of treatment. A bacterial barrier of ALLEVYN 6 with a highly permeable film discourages bacterial colonization; therefore infection control is also addressed - leading to a highly cost effective wound management solution.
