Smith & Nephew, Inc., Endoscopy Division, a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew plc (NYSE: SNN) (London Stock Exchange: SN), today dedicated its newly expanded facility in Mansfield, Mass. Located at 130 Forbes Boulevard, the recently completed expansion increases the size of the facility by more than 60 percent, to nearly 100,000 square feet.
Endoscopic medical instruments and implantable devices used for the repair of shoulders and knees are designed, developed and produced at the Mansfield site. The facility is home to research and development as well as manufacturing processes including machining, hand finishing and sterile packaging. In addition, this state-of-the-art facility also contains the InVentures program, a company initiative enabling surgeons to work directly with a Smith & Nephew multi-disciplined team to develop concepts and explore the commercialization of their technique or instrumentation.
The company, a world leader in the development of endoscopic techniques employs nearly 1000 people in Massachusetts. The Mansfield workforce grew nearly 10 percent in 2001 to a total of 220 employees. It's estimated that another 25 jobs will be added during 2002.

Among the innovative medical devices made in Mansfield are BioRCI™-HA, bioabsorbable screws for the repair of anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, the FasT-Fix™ Meniscal Repair System, the first easy-to-use suture-based implant for meniscal repair and the HandTact™ Instrument Set, a group of lightweight, palm-sized laparoscopic tools specifically designed for surgeons to use with their non-dominant hand during hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery.
The company headquarters is located in Andover, Mass., with additional manufacturing facilities located in Andover and Oklahoma City and service centers in Godmanchester, UK, Tuttlingen, Germany, Johannesburg, South Africa, Tokyo, Brisbane, Australia, Missaussauga, Canada and Saõ Paulo, Brazil.
