Cardiothoracic workstream

Pascal Dohmen discussed the costs associated with Surgical Site Infections (SSI) in cardiothoracic surgery, explaining that the more complex the procedure, generally, the greater the risk of SSI. Cardiothoracic procedures SSI rates are between 3.2 and 25%, with an incidence of mediastinitis between 0.3 and 3%, and mortality, if MRSA is present, around 75% within three years. An SSI will prolong patients’ hospital stay by up to 10 days, with associated direct costs to the European healthcare system of  €19.0 billion p.a.1
