Junior Manufacturing Engineer
Costa Rica

Graduate - Silvia

I first decided that I wanted to become an Engineer while I was still in high school. I attended a science-focused school where I was able to broaden my scientific knowledge, and I knew that I wanted to be able to apply that knowledge. Engineering was a natural career choice.

After graduating from the Universidad de Costa Rica with a degree in Chemical Engineering, I joined Smith & Nephew as a Junior Manufacturing Engineer based at our site in Coyol, Costa Rica. I had heard good things from former classmates who already worked at the company and I felt confident that I would be able to progress my career here.

For me, medical devices seemed a natural fit. The industry plays a critical role in delivering health care to people and I like being part of helping more people to access the solutions they need.

Since joining Smith & Nephew last year, I have learned a lot and I have had opportunities to lead on projects and processes, even though I am quite a new engineer. I feel that I am now able to deal with pressure in more focussed way, I am better at communicating and networking, and I feel much more confident in my own abilities.

My team has always made me feel welcome here, helping me to find my place within the company and supporting me as I learn and grow as a professional.

Less than a year into my career at Smith & Nephew and I feel clear that I made the right choice by going into Engineering. My advice to anyone considering it as a career? Don’t hesitate! Explore the options available because Engineering is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge.
