Maki DG et al. Prospective, randomized trial of gauze and two polyurethane dressings for site care of pulmonary artery catheters: implications for catheter management. Crit Care Med 1994;22(11):1729-1737

Objectives: To compare the safety of a conventional polyurethane transparent dressing and a novel highly permeable polyurethane dressing, as compared with standard gauze and tape, as site dressings for pulmonary artery catheters; and to rigorously determine the sources of bloodstream infections deriving from these catheters. A trend in lower moisture levels under the dressings and lower levels of site colonization were observed with the highly permeable dressing ( IV3000 ). The study confirmed the need for dressings for vascular catheters to be designed to reduce the accumulation of cutaneous moisture under the dressings and keep the site as dry as possible.
