Besley M. IV3000: Potential for improved quality of life for haemodialysis patients with central venous catheters. In: Maki DG (ed), International Congress and Symposium Series 179 'Improving Catheter Site Care'. Royal Society of Medicine Services Ltd, London, New York 1991, 57-59.

Maintenance haemodialysis necessitates both fluid and dietary restrictions. Attending a dialysis centre three times a week interferes with time for work, for family and for leisure. Maintenance haemodialysis requires reliable long-term access to the circulation.

Those patients who are unable to have a peripheral access such as a fistula need a permanent central venous catheter for vascular access. For these patients, the ability to use the bathing method of their choice is limited.
