Screws
Different patients have different needs. Young patients tend to have stronger, harder bone. Older patients tend to have softer, maybe even Osteopenic bone.

Screws for Every Bone
•Normal

• Osteopenic
Tailor the fixation to the patient

Osteopenia Screws
Whether used primarily or as a bailout screw, fixation is improved over that of a standard screw.
In extreme cases gain confidence and peace of mind by providing locking osteopenia screws.

Plates for Every Indication

•Anatomic designs are contoured to match specific anatomy and indications.

•Versatile designs were created to be used for multiple indications.

Plates
Plates for each indication and surgical technique, including MTP Fusion plates, Calcaneus Fracture plates and a Column Fusion plate designed specifically for Charcot Reconstruction.

Clinical Evidence

VLP Foot Clinical Evidence

The need for a bail-out plan: Screw options for Osteoporotic Bone

This study was designed to evaluate the stripping
torque and pullout strength of an osteopenia screw, in both bail-out and preemptive manner, as compared to a standard cortical screw.

The Shear Strength of the VLP Locking Osteopenia Screw versus the VLP Locking Cortical Screw in a PERI-LOC VLP One-Third Locking Tubular Plate Construct

In this study, a shear static load was applied to a low density foam bone analog to simulate a patient with dorsal plating, coupled with compromised bone quality. The utilized loading pattern was designed to be similar to what would be expected when stepping off a curb or into a hole which produces a static shear load.

Design and Technology

VLP Foot Design and Technology

Variable Angle Locking Technology

The variable-angle locking mechanism gives the surgeon more choice in plate placement and screw fixation, by allowing the surgeon to lock screws up to 15% off center axis in any direction.

Low-profile Implants

The profile of the VLP FOOT locking plate is designed to ensure low-profile fixation in areas of minimal soft tissue coverage. All screws in the VLP FOOT system have a low-profile head to further reduce the potential for soft tissue irritation in these sensitive areas.

Compression slots

Many of the VLP FOOT plates incorporate a slot used to assist in compression of fractures or fusions. Slots vary in length depending on each plate design. Various reduction clamps are available to be used in conjunction with the slot to achieve maximum compression.

Optimal plate contour

Many of the VLP FOOT locking plates have an optimized contour customized to specific anatomy to facilitate fusion or fracture reduction and stabilization. As the plate is compressed to bone, the plate will further contour to the specific anatomy of the patient.

Indications

VLP Foot Indications

The Smith & Nephew VLP FOOT Plating System can be used in adolescent (12-18 years) and transitional adolescent (18-21 years) subpopulations and adults, as well as patients with osteopenic bone. The VLP FOOT Plating System is indicated for fracture fixation, reconstruction or arthrodesis of small bones, including those in the forefoot, midfoot and hindfoot.

FAQs

VLP Foot Frequently Asked Questions

What are Osteopenia screws, and why are these beneficial?
Osteopenia screws have the same minor diameter as a cortical screw, with a larger major diameter, and an increased thread pitch. These design features increase pull-out strength and stripping torque over screws with a standard cortical thread form, while still allowing fixation through the same plate.

How can I gain translational compression with the VLP FOOT system?
The compression forceps in the VLP FOOT Instrument set can be used to facilitate compression through any of the plates that contain translation slots. The screw forceps can be placed around the shaft of a partially inserted screw, or around a provisional fixation pin.

Why is your MTP plate flat (0 o dorsal flexion)?
Each patient is unique, and requires varying degrees of flexion in a dorsal MTP plate. Because of this, Smith & Nephew designed instrumentation to help surgeons bend the plates in the operating room. The VLP FOOT Instrument set includes bending irons, bending rods, and a bending handle help surgeons customize each plate to their patient's anatomy.

Why are all of the VLP FOOT plates made out of Stainless Steel?
Our customers have told us that they prefer to use Stainless Steel products primarily because they are typically easier to remove than implants made of Titanium alloys. All of the plates and screws in the VLP FOOT system are made of 316L Stainless Steel.
