Graduate Engineer, Hull, UK

“I love the fact that I’m getting to use my engineering knowledge in a medical company and that what we’re doing will eventually help someone.”

Graduate Engineer Alice

"I studied Mechanical and Medical Engineering at university and I first came across Smith & Nephew while I was still a student. As part of my course, I had the opportunity to work on a couple of projects suggested and led by the company. It was working on these projects that really attracted me to joining Smith & Nephew’s graduate scheme.

"I’m working as a Graduate Engineer in Manufacturing. At the moment I’m in my first rotation in the technical procurement team, testing the raw materials we use in the factory. It’s my role to ensure that any adjustments we make to the materials used in the manufacturing process do not negatively impact on the end product.

"While I have a background in Medical Engineering, I was still surprised by just how much is involved in the creation of a product. It’s so interesting! At university I got to see some of the research and development that goes into a medical device. Now, I’m getting to see the other end of the product development process as it goes through manufacturing.

"I think the highlight for me so far has been getting to run a materials trial in the factory and organising that with our operatives. My communication and planning skills have definitely improved since I joined Smith & Nephew.

"I’m learning all the time and the atmosphere here is really supportive. People are friendly, helpful and approachable.
