The Principles of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) delivers vacuum-assisted pressure below the wound surface to help promote healing. 
NPWT consists of a wound dressing (foam or gauze), a drainage tube inserted into the dressing, and a transparent film that are connected to a suction device.

Indications for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

NPWT is particularly effective at:
  • Promoting granulation tissue formation
  • Reducing bacterial burden
  • Restoring moisture balance
  • Improving perfusion
 NPWT is indicated for patients with acute and chronic wound types:
  • Traumatic
  • Sub-Acute and dehisced wounds
  • Ulcers (such as pressure or diabetic)
  • Partial-thickness burns
  • Flaps and Grafts
 NPWT is contraindicated for:
  • Necrotic tissue and eschar
  • Untreated osteomyelitis
  • Malignancy in wound (with exception of palliative care to enhance quality of life)
  • Exposed arteries, veins, organs or nerves
  • Non-enteric and unexplored fistulas
  • Anastomotic sites
